Nettle Gets Under Your Skin
Formed in Barcelona by electronic musician and DJ Jace Clayton (a.k.a. DJ /rupture), Nettle combines musically and geographically disparate traditions from electronic experimentalism to classical North African composition. On March 21, 2009, Nettle made its U.S. debut at Brandeis University’s Slosberg Music Center. The band’s line-up is fluid with a core membership of six musicians. For this performance Nettle was Brent Arnold (cello), Khalid Bennaji (guembri, vocals), Jace Clayton (electronics), Grey Filastine (percussion), Abdelhak Rahal (violin, banjo), and Daniel Perlin (visuals).
I interviewed Jace backstage before the performance. He talks about the history of Nettle, the band’s residency at Brandeis, and what’s in store for this long-distance project. The photos and music were recorded during the sound check.
